“My father is a small business owner in Keokuk and is one of the few businesses that has been there for a long time.  A lot of small businesses are being taken over by larger ones because they don’t have access to the tools the larger companies have.   They need those tools in order to compete.  You ask a lot of people about companies that they really love and they have excellent customer service.  Smaller companies are positioned better to do that than anyone else, they just might not have the technology to be able to do more.”

Originally, Torey and Carl tried to find a way to help people in their user experience design and technology problem solving, but it didn’t work out.  They decided that instead of having a great idea, it would be better to find a way to use the things they knew to try and help companies get the most business out of their customers.

While Carl was stationed in Afghanistan Torey started interviewing independent insurance agents in the Ankeny and Des Moines Area.  He wanted to know how they used technology and what issues they have.  He found many agents loved their job and wanted to do more to thank their customers, but they didn’t have the time to do so.  Torey and Carl found a way to automate a referral system that identifies customers most likely to refer and gets more customers to do so.

“We didn’t design Rocket Referrals simply to work for us.  We designed it to work for those who are going to use it most.  In fact, Rocket Referrals isn’t something we dreamed up overnight, it’s an idea that was generated through talking with real people that will use it.”
