Lets call this the Startupdate for October 11, 2011.

Today, the Board of Supervisors of Polk County approved a resolution to work with StartupCity Des Moines, alongside the existing partners of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, the City of Des Moines, the Corporation for Economic Development in Des Moines, and the State of Iowa Economic Development department.  This was the last milestone in lining up the funding required for StartupCity Des Moines.

Although the ink is by no means dry on all of the contracts, we are confident that we are moving forward swiftly with final agreements.  We anticipate formally opening this week to our inaugural class of startups as we ‘turn it up’ in the new space.

We have chosen the Fifth floor of the Bank of America building on 6th Street as our new home, and you are invited to drop by and take in the ‘before’ ambiance after we take possession on Friday.  We’re excited to be part of the thriving ‘Silicon Sixth Street’ currently developing, anchored by the Midlands Building on the South end, to the Liberty Building on the North end, with us smack dab in the middle.  We join our friends down the street at Torsion Mobile, Dwolla, 48Web, Silicon Prairie News, EggCrates, DMEvolve, Amici Espresso, Foundry Coworking, Grand Consulting and BitMethod.

It has been eleven months or thereabouts since we first discussed the need for a tech incubator downtown, and as much effort as it has been to forge these partnerships, we are acutely aware that this constitutes ‘stepping up to the starting line’ and not the conclusion of the effort by any means.  Now the hard work begins of working closely alongside the first class of startups and showing the rest of the region, and country, how we do this ‘Iowa style’.
